  • As a collector of Japanese Papersleeve CDs, you really have to be careful that you are buying these from a reputable source! There are many fake copies out there and though I’m not an expert, I’ve bought a few that I thought where real authentic Japanese editions! Turned out to be counterfeit copies! Led Zeppelin is a big one that’s Counterfeited! Other bands like Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles are very popular Counterfeit editions being sold!Luckily I have a friend who moved to Japan after college. He finished, I partied too much and became an electrician, then opened my own company! He went to work in Tokyo for a computer company and his wife ran their store just outside of Tokyo. Now he works there as well and I get a lot of my Papersleeve CDs through him. Also he can get me promo box sets as well. A good webpage that’s helpful is This site has a list of reputable dealers in Japan that I’ve perched many in my collection from. It’s also useful in telling buyers what to look for when buying these little “gems” as far as pictures of Counterfeit items and promo boxes and other facts about how they are packaged and if they where ever produced in the Papersleeve format! Also CDJapan is a reputable source for authentic Japanese CDs,music, gear, books, and other interesting merchandise as well. Amazon Japan is also a useful source and most sellers will ship to the US! Easy to navigate with Catalog number. I’ve found that Japanese sellers tend to be extremely strict on grading as well. Something they call “Very Good” is usually Near Mint to me. Sometimes if it’s used, you’ll just have to make sure the OBI and inserts are intact if these are important to you as they are to me! Google translate helps by coping and pasting the description! New is complete. Amazon US sellers are more troublesome as Listings are poorly classified and I’ve been sent Jewel case disc and had to call Amazon and complain. Their used vinyl is a mess as well! Just my opinion on their management of catalog issues! You have to search the US site with the barcode, not the catalog number and most of the listings are way overpriced!I have Led Zeppelin’s 40th Anniversary boxset that I purchased from an Amazon seller and there all fakes. I finally purchased these one at a time from reputable sellers until I got the whole collection. The fakes are terrible sounding and the only way to make them worth listening to is to rip them to iTunes and you’ll need to have ITunes Match which is like $25.00 a year, which upgrades them to ITunes higher 24bit/44.8kHz format. I don’t care too much for this format, as I have a separate portable DAC player for DSD files and High Resolution files. If I can’t get the physical copy, I download it from various sources. If a deal is too good to be true it most likely is a fake or Counterfiet copy! If it’s coming directly out of Japan it’s going to generally be authentic as Japan has strict laws on Counterfeit music and movies! I’ve found, the hard way, most fakes come out of various countries in Europe and surprisingly Canada! I tend to stay away from these sellers unless they have a very high and positive seller rating! I also buy from a seller in Australia called “themusicspecialist” on eBay! Sells only authentic Japanese CDs! Never have purchased a fake from this great seller yet. Great guy with Hard to find Papersleeve and other audiophile music. Happy collecting and hope this is helpful for other Japanese Papersleeve CD collectors or as most call them Mlps CDs,James
