Notes

Liner notes on Back Cover :

Louis ARMSTRONG, usually called *SATCHMO*, was born in New Orleans on July, 4th, 1900, in a very poor black family of the working class.
Interned in a reformatory school when he was 13 years old, Louis learnt how to play the cornet with one of his keepers. After he left the boarding school, he kept in the background of great orchestras in fashion, and KING OLIVER having noticed him, took him in his orchestra, in 1922. Two years later, he went to New York and joined FLETCHER HENDERSON's orchestra.

Singer and trumpet-player of genius, he gradually imposed the creative richness of his soli and became rapidly the celebrity of Harlem.

Later on, directing his own groups, Louis ARMSTRONG undertook tours through America and Europe, where the mervellous sonority of his playing was welcomed with enthusiasm by all sorts of audience.

the classicism of his style and his innate musical conception gained adherents, and he often found he was copied by great jazzmen. Regarded still now as the king of jazz, Louis ARMSTRONG is beyond all question the strongest personality of his time.

The registerings played on this record are certainly among the best made by Armstrong in the recent years.
